Student Spotlight, Justin Deaver

Justin obtained his Associate of Applied Science Degree General Technology - Welding by attending night classes at ANC while working during the day. This was no easy task some of the classes that were covered such as Blueprint reading: which provides the students with an entry level ability to interpret blueprints and AWS symbols that will be used on all job sites and shops; Oxygen/Acetylene: student learn the proper/safe way to setup and operate manual cutting equipment, pipe bevellers and semi-automatic tract torches; Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW) Pipe: this course provide students the required knowledge to prepare, fit, and weld pipe in 2G, 5G, and 6G positions.  This is a valuable and required skill to obtain employment in the growing pipe industry.

Gas Tungsten Arc Welding prepares students to weld on stainless, carbon steel and aluminum. This process requires good eye/hand coordination. Many companies require welders to have experience in GTAW and SMAW processes to weld on piping projects for chemical, Petro Chemical and Power Plant industries (including Nuclear) and food processing facilities.

SMAW Complete Joint Penetration & Partial Joint Penetration prepare the student for career in the structural welding field. Students will become proficient using E6010 and E7018 electrodes in all positions.  GMAW and FCAW: Prepares students to obtain employment in production weld shops. These processes are used in fabrication shops around the country.  Tank fabrication, heat exchangers and off shore platforms are just some of the jobs that require these skills for fabrication.

Justin had his plate full with his course load as well as his work load at Bronco. Upon successful completion of his degree, Justin completed four pipe welding tests in Baton Rouge to obtain his current employment just on the south side of Chicago at JVIC with a very nice salary. Justin is excited about traveling and working.

“At ANC, I was able to obtain a welding degree which has jump started my career. I want to give thanks to an awesome instructor, Brent Carroll, who took the extra time to teach me all he could about the career and life of a welder. I learned enough at the start of my degree to get a local job at the steel mill as a structural welder.  After graduation, I worked a few more local jobs to gain experience, and now I travel around the Nation working for different companies as a specialty pipe welder. ANC got me started off on the right track."   #weldlife - Justin Deaver
