South Pemiscot Schools Visit Allied Technologies Group!

South Pemiscot’s JAG (Job’s for America’s Graduates) program students and their instructor James Carlisle toured the ANC Crisp Center and ANC ACME Center on March 7th, 2017. Stacey Walker led the tour as the students visited the Mechanical Lab where they heard a short lecture on hydraulics/pneumatics from TSG instructor Rob Semmel. During the presentation, students were allowed to use the hydraulics/pneumatic trainer to demonstrate what is taught in ANC’s basic hydraulics/pneumatics course. The students then moved to the Electrical Lab where instructor Scott Follett lectured on electricity, mechanical drives and bearings, and lean manufacturing subjects. Scott stressed the importance of ACT test scores and encouraged everyone to take the more rigorous classes to challenge themselves.

The final stop at the Crisp Center provided quick informational session by Stacey Walker, Coordinator of Industrial Training. She introduced students to the different degree plans offered through ANC’s Allied Technologies Division before showing a video of the new Allied Technologies Center which should be built within the next two years.

Courtney Cooper, ANC Coordinator of Placement Services, discussed the ANC internship opportunities as well as job prospects in the area along with current pay scales for those jobs. Doug Echols, ANC WORK Coordinator followed up the session with information about the WORK Program and opportunities that are available with that short 8-week program.

The group then traveled to the ACME center where Aviation Maintenance Instructor Frank Hernandez discussed the benefits of the Aviation Maintenance Program along with some of the job opportunities and salaries that accompany jobs in the field. Following discussion, Mr. Hernandez provided a tour of the ACME Center where engines, planes, and projects that the current students are working on were displayed.

Brent Carroll, Welding instructor, then led the students through the weld shop at the ACME Center and gave a detailed discussion of the program components. He also shared with students the different coupons and weld tests that are used in industry. ANC is fortunate to have a welding program with a licensed Certified Welding Inspector. This allows students the opportunity to test after completion of a process and qualify with an American Welding Society qualification so they are able to work in industry.

This was a great tour with lots of information packed into a two hour time frame. The instructors enjoyed sharing the information and the students enjoyed learning about the different types of degree plans and opportunities that ANC has to offer.
