Arkansas Northeastern College’s Allied Technologies Division
and Northeastern Arkansas Community Correctional Center collaborated to provide
several opportunities to inmates recently incarcerated. During the Spring 2017
semester (January – May), 10 inmates traveled to Arkansas Northeastern College
Burdette Center four days per week to complete classes towards the Certificate
of Proficiency in Construction Technology program. This course was completely
funded by the Arkansas Sector Partnership Grant and the Office of Skills
Development grant.
These participants gained 16 hours of college credit in
- Construction Technology I
- Construction Technology II
- Craft Skills
- Shielded Metal Arc Welding (Partial Joint Penetration)
- Oxygen Acetylene Safety
Upon successful completion, the participants were able to
apply for an internship opportunity at a local company, Waste Pro, as well as
other opportunities such as completing another degree at Arkansas Northeastern
College or transferring to another institution.
Lead Construction Technology instructor Marty Crawford
qualified them on heavy equipment such as skid steer loaders, mini excavator,
scissor lift, and boom lift heavy equipment.
They also received an OSHA 10 card for General Industry, which is a
national recognized credential, taught by Rob Semmel.
Jarrod Wells, new welding adjunct instructor, taught the
SMAW and Oxygen Acetylene Safety courses as well as wrote recommendation
letters for successful individuals and expressed the importance of continuing
their education at Arkansas Northeastern College.
Office of skills development funded 50% of the total cost of training for this project.
