Nucor Hickman Patch
Welding Training
January – March 2017, Brent Carroll (TSG’s Certified Welding
Inspector), trained 13 Nucor Hickman employees onsite at Nucor Hickman in Patch
Welding. Arkansas Northeastern College and Nucor Hickman have maintained a close
relationship for the past several years especially in the area of welding training.
Nucor Hickman is a manufacturer of flat sheet metal and employees about 650 people.
ANC will be providing the training onsite at Nucor Hickman to accommodate the
different shift hours and rotating shifts. This is a customized schedule to
meet the needs of all of their employees involved in this process. Brent
Carroll, traveled to Nucor Hickman one day a week for several weeks to conduct
this training at night during their shift rotation. This training was completed
on Nucor Hickman's equipment ensuring that the training is effective, real
world, and practical. This training is a technical skill that allows these
employees to rely on their skills to keep Nucor's equipment running and allows
them to foresee equipment failures before it becomes a problem.
Nucor has given ANC directions and information about the
content and our welding instructor is piecing together a short customized
curriculum to meet their needs. Participants involved in this training are not
limited to maintenance positions. Nucor will be opening up this training for
other departments as well as the maintenance department; this allows more
people to be cross-trained in the instance of an equipment failure.
Office of Skills Development Grant awarded Nucor Hickman 75%
of the total cost of this training.
