Nucor Yamato Steel receives 75% funding for Programmable Logic Controllers Course, 5/9/2017

Arkansas Northeastern College’s customized training arm—The Solutions Group, trained five Nucor Yamato Steel employees in Programmable Logic Controllers during the spring 2017 semester, January - May. This three-credit hour college course applies toward any of the degree plans in the Allied Technologies Division of the college. The course was customized to offer a schedule to fit the rotating work schedule for employees at Nucor Yamato. This allowed the individuals to take classes on their days off. Other local employers such as BlueOak, Tristate, Primetals, and Ryerson also sent their employees to this course. During the course participants studied the following topics:
  • Introduction to Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs)
  • PLC Operation
  • PLC Programming Language
  • Basic PLC Programming
  • Project Creation and Organization
  • PLC motor control
  • Program analysis and troubleshooting
  • Discrete I/O Interfacting
  • Electronic Device Interfacing
The participants also worked on a project that lasted throughout the course. All lab work and hands-on activities were performed using Allen-Bradley ControlLogix 5000 software and ControlLogix PLC Hardware.
Instructor, Steve Crosskno (Electrical Engineer), guided them through the course. Upon successful completion, the student should have a thorough understanding of basic PLC hardware functions, programming basic instructions of ladder logic, and terminology associated with PLCs. Students will gain valuable insight in PLC interfacing to various devices.
Nucor Yamato Steel received 75% of the total cost of training funded by the Office of Skills Development.
