The
American Welding Society (AWS) Student Fair held its first annual event
this October. This event was the kickoff for Arkansas Northeastern
College’s (ANC’s) newest AWS student chapter (District 17 Northeastern
Arkansas Section 512). A great turn out of over 100 local high school
students in various disciplines – Construction, Welding, Computer
Science, Robotics, and Steel Technology. During the event, students
were able to try activities such as blacksmithing, oxygen-acetylene torch
cutting, and various welding processes. Attendees also enjoyed corn
hole and tasty BBQ cooked by ANC Students: Byron Kisner, Leo Michuda and Landon
Harris. A special shout out to our own resident blacksmith, Thomas
Barron, whose knowledge and passion of the art was a ray of sunshine to
our event.
This
event would never have been possible without the help from our local
industrial partners: Nucor-Yamato Steel Company, Nucor Steel Arkansas,
NRG Energy, Lexicon, The Systems Group, Big River Steel and Airgas.
Through their contributions, the AWS Student Chapter was able to perform
these demos and give away some amazing prizes.
This
event was a great success in drawing interest to the AWS Student
Chapter and plans are already in place for next year’s event.
The
AWS Student Chapter is looking forward to more success in the future
and cannot wait to get started on designing, fabrication, and learning
more about the dynamic world of welding.
