Association of Women in the Metals Industry - Makes Cacti out of Rebar @ ANC

On January 14, the Association of Women in the Metals Industry – Tennessee Chapter visited the ANC Welding Department for a two-hour, hands-on seminar focused on heat treatment principles and rebar fabrication. The seminar provided participants with both technical knowledge and creative application, blending metallurgy fundamentals with practical welding skills. Attendees explored how heat treatment impacts material properties such as strength, hardness, and ductility—key concepts for anyone working in metals manufacturing or fabrication.

To reinforce learning, participants applied their skills by fabricating cactus-themed yard art using rebar. This creative project allowed attendees to practice cutting, fitting, welding, and finishing techniques while demonstrating how industrial skills can translate into functional and artistic metalwork.

The session was led by ANC’s experienced instructors Allen Holmquist, CWI & Metallurgical Engineer  Ibrahim Alisic, CWI & Austin Coleman.

Their instruction emphasized safety, proper heat control, and technique selection—ensuring participants gained both confidence and competence in the shop environment.

This visit highlighted the importance of collaboration between industry organizations and technical education programs. By engaging directly with ANC’s facilities and instructors, AWMI members gained insight into welding education pathways while strengthening connections that support workforce development and inclusion within the metals industry.

The ANC Welding Department was proud to host the AWMI Tennessee Chapter and looks forward to future opportunities to support professional learning, creativity, and growth in the metals community.
