ANC Solutions Group Team Presents at Spring Meeting

On March 18, 2026, Arkansas Northeastern College (ANC) had the opportunity to showcase an innovative approach to workforce development at the Annual Carl Perkins Spring Meeting. Director for Industrial Training & Perkins Coordinator Jernal Woods, alongside the Associate Vice President of Workforce Development, delivered a spotlight presentation highlighting a unique initiative designed to spark interest in trade careers.

The presentation centered on ANC’s creative use of permanent jewelry welding as an entry point into traditionally trades fields such as steel manufacturing, welding, and construction. While permanent jewelry may seem like a nontraditional training tool, it has proven to be an effective and engaging way to introduce foundational technical skills in an accessible, hands-on format.

Through this activity, participants were introduced to essential competencies that directly translate to industrial careers. These included reading a tape measure, proper tool usage (such as pliers, cutters, and grinders), and an understanding of safety protocols and personal protective equipment (PPE). By embedding these skills into a creative and relatable project, ANC demonstrated how technical training can be both practical and engaging.

The response at the conference reinforced the value of thinking outside the box when it comes to workforce engagement. Programs like this not only build technical skills but also help reshape perceptions about who belongs in the trades.

ANC appreciates the support from ADHE and Carl Perkins staff for allowing us to show some techniques that have worked for our area to engage students.
